The Man Who Stole Sex Is Nabbed

The man who stole sex, well, sex.com, has been nabbed in Tijuana, Mexico. If you haven’t heard the sordid tale regarding the sex.com domain name, it will amaze you.

Gary Kremen is known as the man who started the monstrous Internet dating site Match.com.  A less well-known secret is he also was the first to register the sex.com domain name. Dating and sex, it just goes together.

Steve Cohen

Steve Cohen is the man in the middle of this soap opera. With a checkered history, Cohen has been convicted of fraud, grand theft and operating a sex club in a residential neighborhood. He has also bee convicted of pretending to be a lawyer in a bankruptcy fraud scam.

In the 1990s, Cohen used a fraudulent transfer not to move the sex.com domain name out of Kremen’s name and into his own. Then the fun began. As the Internet grew, a lot of people would type in the sex.com domain name. All kinds of pay for membership sites were listed on the domain and Cohen made millions. Kremen sued everyone and went to the feds. Cohen hit the road, but was convicted of fraud galore and found liable for $60 million plus dollars. The problem, of course, was collecting.

Cohen had been known to be living in Mexico, but nabbing him was difficult. Mexican authorities never seemed that interested, which raises questions of protection money and such. Then Cohen made a mistake. His daughter was nabbed trying to cross the border with 200 pounds of the funny grass. Next thing you know, Mexican authorities nabbed Cohen.

Cohen now sites in a California jail. He has a heavy social calendar of court appearances and his goose appears to be cooked. Ever the bravado, he has offered to settle the entire mess for $100,000.  Hmmmm….65 million-dollar judgment, $100k settlement…I don’t think so!

This soap opera will undoubtedly continue to spur bizarre twists. Keep your eyes on it.
